Quotables [My Reads 2012]

You create your own world. Everything around you is the product of your beliefs. -Naturi Thomas

Today was my first day of the second semester of graduate school. I was so excited I ran home and immediately recorded a vlog talking about the 5 things every SLP graduate student needs. Due to technical difficulties, I could not post the video tonight…

In the meantime, please enjoy this less interactive but still very important post of my favorite book quotes from books I indulged in 2012.

Luckily, I do have a list of the books I read for the first half of 2012. Honorable mentions include: Daughters by asha bandele and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. I also read a very inspiring autobiography by Dr. Lisa Masterson entitled Paper Dollhouse.

Here are my favorite quotes of 2012 books:

“You have to love you right. That’s all you got. Even when every body else is bent on loving you wrong, and wrong begins to look like it’s not that wrong, you got to love yourself right. Especially then. And you got to do it in public. You got to do it where everybody can notice and say, That girl there? She love herself.” – asha bandele, daughters.

“We Indians should be better liars, considering how often we’ve been lied to.” -S. Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian

“Drinking would shut down my seeing and my hearing and my feeling” she would say,”Why would I want to be in the world if I couldn’t touch the world with all my senses intact?” -S. Alexie

“A guy will treat you only as well as you treat yourself. If he’s not capable of treating you the way you deserve to be treated, run, even if he’s hot. Especially if he’s hot.” -Naturi Thomas, How to Die in Paris

“Sometimes you wake up in the morning and have no idea it’s going to be one of the best days of your life” -Naturi Thomas

“But I have to believe everything happens for a reason. And that includes the way we suffer, and the lessons that suffering imparts to us.” -Naturi Thomas

I did not read this book in 2012, but in 2011 but I love this quote!

From this point forward, you will focus on what can be controlled. And you will no longer be sad or worried. You will be grateful! After all, the seeds of depression cannot take root in a grateful heart. -Andy Andrews, The Noticer

  1. I think I’m going to be into memoirs this year. I have a few on my Wishlist already. The first one I’m going to read is by Chamique Holdsclaw. She’s a former WNBA player who suffers from mental illness.

I think if I allowed myself to, I could read nothing but memoirs. I love them!

I have a ridiculous list set up for 2013! (forgive me now for the long list):

Outliers; The Hobbit;Ana Karenina; The Perks of Being A Wallflower; Life of Pi; 4 Hour Work Week; The Ten Commandements for Working in A Hostile Environment; The Giver; The Origin of Species; A Taste of Power: A Black Woman’s Story; The Turkish Lover; The Last Lecture; Come On, People; Mighty Be Our Powers; Moloka’i; Around the World in 80 Days; Wuthering Heights; The Dream Giver; The Purpose Driven Life; No APologies; The Prosaic SOul of Nikki Giovanni; The Secret…

Not in that order; but that’s my list for 2013. Hopefully I can accomplish it.

    1. Ooo! Juicy list, I’m trying to get my hands on Life of Pi right now. We should try to revive our love child (IRBR) with some new posts- if you’re up to it! 🙂

Best of wishes on your continued grad school. For some reason I’m overly proud of the two A’s I earned last semester in undergraduate studies. Knowing I could do it, then actually putting in the hard work and actually accomplishing really, really thrilled me.

Already planning to read more Sylvia Day novels and keeping a devotional to help spiritually mold me. Gonna peep the Daughters read you’ve listed. I ordered Ralph Wiley’s Dark Witness, Mitch Albom’s The Fab Five, and Terry McMillan’s Disappearing Acts last week on amazon.com. Very inspiring quotes, Tica.

    1. I didn’t know you liked to read so much. I haven’t been so inspired to read recently, although I have books galore that are pending.
      Thanks, here’s to more A’s!
